Mr Kieran Chilcott, Chair of the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC), today announced the appointment of Dr Steve Hambleton as an independent director of QAIHC. Dr Hambleton’s appointment is effective as of 14 February 2018.

The appointment continues QAIHC’s move towards greater diversity in experience and background on the QAIHC board, with Dr Hambleton having been a member of various committees and taskforces focused on health care reforms in Australia.

“Dr Hambleton brings with him significant credibility, directorship experience, along with over 30 years of clinical practice and national health sector reform expertise, experience and knowledge. He is also well recognised for his services to the medical profession,” Chilcott said.

“He is a specialist General Practitioner working in Brisbane and a former State and later Federal President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA). He is a valuable addition to the QAIHC Board and our board is looking very forward to working with him.”

Dr Hambleton has been the AMA representative on various national committees and taskforces including Chair of the AMA Taskforce on Indigenous Health. He was the Chair of the Australian Government Primary Health Care Advisory Group; is a member of the Australian Government Health Care Homes Implementation Advisory Group; and the Deputy Chair of the Australian Government Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Review Taskforce.

Dr Hambleton is a member of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care’s Australian Atlas of Healthcare Variation Advisory Group. He is Deputy Chair of the Australian Digital Health Agency Expansion Program and Co-Sponsor of the clinical programs.
