Purpose

       To develop, implement, and evaluate an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Population Health Unit – via a regional hub model;

       To provide population health expertise and service delivery support  to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services; and

       To enable a population health evidence-based approach to developing prevention programs.

Objectives

       To improve co-ordination, monitoring and service delivery support at the local and regional level – gaps and priority needs.

       To establish local level networks for collaboration in prevention and population health initiatives.

       To build the capacity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services sector.

       To enhance the use of existing resources and influence new investment into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prevention programs.

       To build a strong, collaborative partnership with Queensland Health population health services and units  - add value rather than duplicate.

       A dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population health approach.

Strategies

       State-wide population health services via two regional hubs (northern and southern);

       Designed to improved the interface between primary health care and population health services and programs.

       Core population health expertise – specialist, nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, alcohol etc

       Underpinned by a focus on data management support and monitoring.

       The QAIHC Centre for Clinical Research Excellence will provide research support to the Population Health Unit.
